Professor C. Kay Weaver began her working life with the West Midlands Police Force in Birmingham, England. She then moved into journalism and then completed a BA(Hons) and PhD through Stirling University's prestigious Department of Film and Media Studies. After graduating from her first degree she worked in research projects funded by the British Broadcasting Standards Council and Hansard Society for Parliamentary Government. She moved to New Zealand in 1995.
Kay has a range of research interests in communication, media, and public relations. She has published widely in journals and edited book collections and is co-author of Cameras in the Commons (1990), Women Viewing Violence (1992), and Violence and the Media (2003). She is co-editor of Critical Readings: Violence and the Media (2006) and Global Public Relations: Paradigms and Perspectives (2011) . Her research draws on a range of theoretical and methodological approaches including theories of reception and communication effects, discourse, feminist, cultural, and post-structuralist analysis.
Kay has been a member of externally funded research teams that have been awarded over NZ$4.5 million in funds. In 2011 Kay took on the role of Pro Vice-Chancellor of Postgraduate Research at the University of Waikato. She continues to research and publish, as well as teach and supervise doctoral students.
